This Temple is the only surviving Buddhist monastery from the Asuka Period in it's original state ("Horyuji," 2017). This is one of the oldest wooden buildings in Japan with columns topped by wooden block plateds to hold the heavy roofs up (Horyujji," 2017). The Main Hall which is also known as Kondo, has wooden decorations of dragons on the outside that was thought to protect against fires, and the interior has brightly colored murals that represent the vision of Buddha ("Horyuji," 2017). In 1949 CE, the wall paintings were destroyed in a fire but have since been restored exactly the same ("Horyuji," 2017). The Shaka Triad is one of the most important objects of worship in this Temple. It is a cast bronze and gilded sculpture and is made by the celebrated sculptor Tori Busshi ("Horyuji," 2017).
